Fun Sushi Momo – Fullerton, CA

It seems as though Sushi Momo isn’t getting the credit it deserves. Sure it’s located in the heart of downtown Fullerton and has many “competitors” such as Chomps, but for those who have been here and have rated it negatively, I’d say eat at Chomps and stay there.

The first thing noticed upon walking in this establishment are the somewhat tacky plastic, cartoonish sea creatures posted all along the walls. It does seem more like an Asian version of TGIF but once sitting down and looking at the menu, your thoughts will change quick. Their main menu offers everyday items you’ll see at most Sushi spots such as “California Rolls” and “Cucumber Rolls” as well as Teriyaki dishes.

Do me a favor and put down that menu and take a little look at their Sushi/Sashimi/Rolls menu. This is where things change.

My friend has eaten some pretty strange dishes from around the world that would seem normal to their respective countries but certainly taboo to us Americans. What we ordered for dinner tonight would make most you “roll” lovers gag. But hey, isn’t that what Japanese Sushi is all about?

1. Toro (fatty tuna): our #1 favorite of the evening. Melt-in-your-mouth like room-temperature butter. Unbelievably delicious.

2. Uni (sea urchin): served cold and fresh so it tastes like straight from the ocean. Creamy in texture and little to no after taste.

3. No Name Roll: only rolls we ordered and must say they were the best I’ve ever had. They’re what rolls are supposed to be: fish wrapped with soy rice paper and nothing else.

4. Spanish Mackerel: a bit tangy from the light touch of Ponzu sauce dripped on top with a mild finish.

5. Octopus (Tako): a bit chewy (duh) but overall lip-smacking good.

All this served with drinks for under $100.

If you can find a place just as good in Fullerton, please do not hesitate to inform.

Oh and btw, service here was excellent. See you soon, Momo.
